Why Supplements Can Make You Sick

Nutritional supplementation is a fact of life. We supplement our bread, our milk, our cereals, and many other foods you find in the grocery store. Plus, many of us take nutritional supplements. But taken inappropriately, these supplements can make you sick !

  1. You can overdose, e.g. on vitamin D or vitamin A
  2. You can create an imbalance, e.g. too much calcium without enough magnesium can create constipation
  3. You can use supplements and pretend you are getting a balanced diet, when you really aren’t

So, here are some basic principles that I follow to keep my supplement program safe and healthy:

  1. I only take high quality, balanced supplements. I’m not a nutritional scientist, so I go with products that can be trusted, namely, Shaklee. This has been the foundation of my program for the last 30 years.
  2. I supplement with concentrated whole foods
  3. I regularly take breaks from my supplementation program

My job involves a lot of computer work, which means I am sitting down at a desk for long periods in a day. This means, I must get as much nutrition as possible into just a few calories. A good start, which I personally use and give to my family, is Shaklee. They are a responsible company that makes great products.
